Monogatari Watch Order.

Monogatari Watch Order .The Monogatari series has a complex timeline. It is both chronologically and in terms of the order of light novels and anime series. The five main seasons are the first, second, final, off, and monster seasons. Each season has its “monogatari” installment and each installment has its arc. Usually, these arcs range from 1 to 7 arcs.

The first season consists of two books/anime courses: Nisemonogatari (Bakemonogatari) and Nekomonogatari Black (Nekomonogatari Black). Kizumonogatari was originally announced in 2012 as an anime movie. However, the film was delayed until 2015, when it was finally released as a trilogy that began in January 2016 and ended a year later.

The second season consists of five stories: Nekomonogatari white, Kabukimonogatari and Hanamonogatari as well as Otorimonogatari and Onimonogatari. First Season consisted of two volumes, and two additional books, each with one volume. Second Season has one volume and one arc book. The anime adaptation Monogatari Season Second Season includes all five books, except Hanamonogatari, which was released later separately.

The final season includes Tsukimonogatari (Koyomimonogatari), Owarimonogatari and Zoku Owarimonogatari. This Season closes the first major story line in the series. Final Season is a single anime arc with Tsukimonogatari. It also contains another compilation adaptation with Owarimonogatari. This adaptation includes Koyomimonogatari’s first two volumes. The adaptation of Owarimonogatari’s third and final volume was released in a special two-day app. Zoku Owarimonogatari was shown in Japanese theaters and aired as a special. There were six episodes on TV in 2019. Due to their release dates, the Kizumonogatari Trilogy of Films could be considered part of Final Season in anime series. However, Kizumonogatari is officially included with First Season along with the light novel series.

The Off Season contains stories that take place after Final Season, as well as throughout the series timeline. These stories include Orokamonogatari’s Wazamonogatari and Nademonogatari. These stories are meant to fill in the gaps between the previous season and prepare for the next. Although no anime adaptations have been announced, Aniplex has suggested that one adaptation is underway, and Akiyuki Shibo expressed his interest in adapting any novel in the series.

Monster Season has more stories with Shinobumonogatari, Yoimonogatari and Amarimonogatari. The rest of the season will see Shinomonogatari released in Summer 2021. These seem to continue the story in a major story arc. It has not been confirmed that there will be any anime adaptations.

Numerous short stories were also released. However, it is unlikely that they will ever be made into anime.

Only the Bakemonogatari books have been officially released in English. A few parts of the series have been fan-translated online. After the official release, many sites have removed their translations.

A Bakemonogatari manga adaptation began serialization in 2018. It should be treated as an independent series, since it appears to follow its own canon.

Which Order Should I Read/Watch?

Which Order Should I Read/Watch?

There are many options for how to watch the series. This is due to both complications in order of release between adaptations, and meta narrative story telling. Each has its pros and cons. You can choose which one suits you best. For most people, there shouldn’t be any order that ruins the experience.

As of the writing of this article:

  1. Officially announced Animated Adaptations to Off Season and Monster Season are yet to be made.
  2. So far, Officially released in English are the books from Bakerogatari to Zoku Owarimonogatari.

There are also limitations to the series, with some parts not being available entirely for English speakers, except for sporadic fan translations.

Light Novel Release/ Nisio Isin

Monogatari Watch Order

This route is for those who want to see the story in its original form. However, you will miss the mystery and anticipation of the Kizumonogatarifilm adaptions that some fans enjoyed during release ,and other minor differences in meta-narrative.

This is the original order that stories were published by Nisio Isin. All shuffles in chronological order are completely intentional for the story, so certain plot points regarding Kizumonogatari are less confusing than the anime release order. Although some argue that the anime placements for Hanamonogatari, and Koyomimonogatari work slightly better than their original ones, these changes are minor. Hybrid order.

You should note that this order is for Hanamonogatari between Second season and the 10th episode.

Anime Release/SHAFT Order

Anime Release/SHAFT Order

If you’re looking to see the original order of the anime series, this is the best way to go.

This was for a long time the order of anime watchers (and all English-speaking people) because it was the most plausible. Studio Shaft had to temporarily skip Kizumonogatari, and there were no official English translations available for the series until 2015. This is how long-time English-speaking and anime-only fans first experienced the series.

It also marks the return to anime programming of some of the original staff members who were involved in the presentation of Bakemonogatari but less with later parts. These included director Tatsuya Omi, composer Satoru Kasaki, and renowned animators like Gen’ichirou Abe or Ryo Imamura.

There are some reshuffles within the meta narrative. However, the most significant difference is that it presents Kizumonogatari, the original story, as a mystery missing part of the story. This will be revealed later in the series, just before the conclusion of the main story. Some people enjoy this added mystery and don’t mind it. Others argue that it leaves too many questions unanswered that are not answered in the series, and that it is now obsolete. It works more like a happy accident than an intentional story, which means that certain plot points surrounding the origin story don’t flow as well. Kizumonogatari also appears in more explicit references in the novels. This means it doesn’t work well as a reading sequence.

Some people like the reshuffles that the Anime Release Order introduces in Kizumonogatari. Therefore, we recommend a slightly different, non-official Hybrid Order to replace the original intended order.

English Light Novel Order / “Kizumonogatari first” Order

English Light Novel Order / "Kizumonogatari first" Order

If the rest seems intimidating or boring, Kizumonogatari could be a good starting point. Kizumonogatari, the origin story of the series, is undoubtedly the most accessible. It features intense animation and a simple plot. This is in contrast to Bakemonogatari which starts the story at the beginning of the timeline. It does this to add more mystery and intrigue to its characters. Additionally, it has long scenes of dialogue that viewers may need to get used to or more invested in.

Although he stated it at a simpler time, author Nisio claimed in the author’s notes of the novel that Kizumonogatari could come before Bakmonogatari. This is the official English release. It follows the novel release order for the subsequent parts. The only difference is that Bake and Kizu were swapped at the beginning. This could also be called the “Vertical”, as this is the publishing company responsible for the English release. However, they have since changed their name to Kodansha USA.

Chronological Order

Chronological Order

This order removes all meta narrative elements and creates a linear, continuous story. This is another viable option. However, most recommend it for rewatching or rereading rather then a first viewing. This order is also the most difficult to access as the viewer must jump between anime courses and novels at different times, rather than reading each one. Some material is still being translated or adapted.

The Koyomimonogatari episodes are largely rough estimates. They occur either in between or during certain anime series episodes. It is therefore difficult to include them in a linear listing.

Even if you don’t view the film chronologically, it’s still beneficial to remember this information during traditional viewings. For volume numbers, the following refers to western releases.

  1. Acerola Bon Appetit (Wazamonogatari)
