Why you need to Watch Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury

Updated October 20, 2022 by Ernie

Studio Sunrise returns yet again for another original Gundam series that is titled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Just to note that the last time we had a Gundam SERIES was 3 years ago which was Gundam Build Diver Season 2! I know it’s surprising, right?! Even I can’t believe that 3 years have already passed, and I still can’t get over the ending of the other Gundam series I’ve watched! So let’s get it on with Sunrise’s latest entry!

So, the story starts off with Suletta Mercury piloting her Gundam Aerial and she encounters a person floating in space believing that it needs to be rescued. She unhesitantly rescues that person only to receive an angry face from a girl.

The girl’s name is Miorine Rembran, a student from the same piloting department that Suletta attends, who attempts to escape the place and get to Earth. Suletta eventually gets involved with Miorine’s life problems which will probably turn her whole life upside down.

The plot is definitely building up to something bigger and that is definitely worth watching for! Add to that the beauty, and the satisfying visuals and animations that this amazing studio gives us!

So what’s in the latest Gundam series?

So anyway, the newest Gundam entry, the Witch from Mercury, is now airing as I am writing this blog itself. It first aired a few weeks ago on October 2, but before the airing of the main series began, it had a prologue episode that aired last August 31 of the same year and it kinda came off my anime radar because I just discovered the prologue a few weeks ago.

Starting from the prologue, I got to say that it got a powerful head start for the new anime series and introduced us to new characters very well in those 24 minutes of run time. Not to mention the rollercoaster of emotions I’ve felt during the prologue and even though we didn’t have much time to connect with the new characters, the studio still managed to pull off a heartbreaking moment for its fans and also to fellow Gundam enthusiasts. Of course, I’m not going to mention the characters or what specifically happened to them to avoid spoilers! You know the rules, and so do I and if you wanna know, then you gotta watch it.

Who is this “Witch from Mercury”?

Now before we start talking aboutwhat makes this anime have good potential and why you need to watch it, let’s introduce you first to the main character, Suletta Mercury. As far as my Gundam series knowledge remembers, this is the VERY FIRST TIME that we get to have a female main character for a Gundam anime. Sure, there were female characters in the previous Gundam series, but they were not the main focus of the plot and that fact alone is what makes this series more unique than the others!

What we know so far about Suletta Mercury is that she is a very timid person and has a completely opposite personality than the time when she was just a child. She is also enrolled in a piloting department of Asticassia School of Technology as a 2nd year student who came from Mercury.

Suletta pilots the Gundam Aerial, as she gained the ability to pilot it when she was a kid as shown in the prologue episode. Other than her being bad at socializing, she is known to have a quote “If you move forward, you gain two” and we’ll have to wait for her character development to see what improvements we can see.

That is Suletta Mercury, and she may not sound interesting at all but the way she talks to other people is kinda entertaining if you ask me because of her being awkward all the time! Let’s just hope that it does not reach the point where it gets worse and annoying.

Why you REALLY need to watch this

So why do you need to watch The Witch from Mercury? One of them is… ANIMATION. Of course, let’s talk about that first because anyone would want to read anything that concerns the animation of an anime show. Few words to say for that, the animation is amazing.

Just like any other Gundam series, Studio Sunrise never fails to give you the best of the best when it comes to animation. The movement of the mechas, the consistency in details and add to that, the prosthetics that the mobile suits have can be somewhat similar to the other series, Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolts. Everything is over the roof and just thinking about Gundam Aerial’s first activation gives me goosebumps!

When it comes to background music, it also never fails to hype people up especially during the first major fight in the Prologue episode. The first battle music had this singing choir that just instantly popped out of nowhere signaling the beginning of the episode’s climax and I truly hope that we get to hear more of that kind of music in the later episodes.

Let’s not forget the sound effects which are really crisp to the ears like the sound of the laser blasts and the sound of impact of one mecha to another making the scene more impactful and heavier. Oh, and if you’re a fan of YOASOBI then you’re gonna love this more because they are the ones singing in the opening song, Shukufuku.

CONCLUSION

If you’re somehow hesitating because you are new to this kind of series, then you don’t have to worry about anything because Witch from Mercury occurs in a different timeline than the other Gundam series making it more enjoyable to watch. So, what are you waiting for? Hop on the hype train and wait for the bigger events that are about to happen in the new Gundam series, The Witch from Mercury!
